How to do it

  1. Stand with a dumbbell in each hand in front of the thighs, palms facing the body.
  2. Set the feet hip-width, knees soft, chest up.
  3. Pull the dumbbells up along the body, leading with the elbows out to the sides.
  4. Stop when the elbows reach shoulder height.
  5. Lower slowly until the arms are straight.

Tips

  • Dumbbells let each hand find a comfortable path, so let them drift slightly apart as they rise.
  • Keep the elbows above the hands.
  • Keep the neck long and the shoulders away from the ears.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the dumbbells up to the chin with the elbows above the head.
  • Swinging the torso to start the lift.
  • Bending the wrists back at the top.
