Level: BeginnerEquipment: DumbbellMulti-joint (compound)Unilateral: one arm or leg at a time

How to do it

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and stand at the start of a clear walkway.
  2. Step forward with one leg and lower until the back knee is just above the floor.
  3. Push through the front heel and swing the back leg through into the next step.
  4. Continue alternating legs as you walk forward.
  5. Bring the feet together after the last step and set the dumbbells down.

Tips

  • Keep the steps long and even so each rep looks the same.
  • Stay tall and look ahead, not at your feet.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the front knee cave inward.
  • Taking short steps so the front heel lifts.
  • Rushing and losing control at the bottom.

Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.

Stepping forward means braking with the quads. A split stance loads the front leg's quads and glute max, the glute medius and adductors keep the knee and pelvis in line, and the trunk resists the narrow base.
