Z Press

The Z Press is a strength exercise with a barbell for your shoulders. Share of the load in the Zulta muscle model: front delts 33%, side delts 17% and triceps (lateral head) 11%.

Level: AdvancedEquipment: BarbellMulti-joint (compound)

How to do it

  1. Set a barbell in a rack at shoulder height when you sit on the floor.
  2. Sit on the floor with your legs straight and slightly apart, and unrack the bar onto the front of your shoulders.
  3. Sit tall without any back support, core braced.
  4. Press the bar straight up, moving the head back slightly and then through, until the arms are straight.
  5. Lower the bar under control to the front of your shoulders.

Tips

  • Pull the toes toward you and press the heels down to lock your base.
  • If the lower back rounds, start with a lighter bar.

Common mistakes

  • Slumping as the bar goes overhead.
  • Leaning back to press.
  • Letting the bar drift forward over the legs.

  • Upper abs Stabilizer2%
  • Rear delts Stabilizer2%

Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.

Seated removes most of the trunk demand. Pressing overhead is shoulder flexion and abduction with elbow extension: the front delt leads, the lateral delt and triceps assist, and the upper traps and serratus rotate the shoulder blade up.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the Z Press work?

Mainly the front delts. The side delts, triceps (lateral head), triceps (long head) and triceps (medial head) assist.

Is the Z Press good for beginners?

The Z Press is rated advanced. If you are new, learn the Seated Barbell Overhead Press first and build up from there.

What is a good alternative to the Z Press?

For example the Barbell Z Press, Seated Barbell Overhead Press and Seated Dumbbell Overhead Press. They train mostly the same muscles, some with different equipment.
