Triceps
Tricep Push Up
The Tricep Push Up is a strength exercise with no equipment for your triceps. Share of the load in the Zulta muscle model: mid chest 24%, triceps (lateral head) 15% and front delts 13%.
How to do it
- Start in a high plank with your hands directly under your shoulders, fingers pointing forward.
- Brace your midsection so the body forms a straight line from head to heels.
- Lower your chest while keeping the elbows pinned to your sides, pointing straight back.
- Stop when your chest is just above the floor.
- Press back up by straightening the elbows fully.
Tips
- Let the upper arms brush the ribs on every rep.
- Finish each rep with a full elbow lockout to work the triceps.
Common mistakes
- Letting the elbows drift out to the sides.
- Stopping short of the floor.
- Letting the hips sag.
Muscles worked by the Tricep Push Up
Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.
Hands under the chest raise triceps activity (Cogley 2005). The push up is a closed-chain bench press: same chest, front delt and triceps pattern, with more serratus because the shoulder blades move freely and a plank-like core demand.
