Abs
Tuck Up
The Tuck Up is a strength exercise with no equipment for your abs. Share of the load in the Zulta muscle model: upper abs 40%, lower abs 29% and obliques 17%.
How to do it
- Lie flat on your back with the legs straight and the arms stretched overhead.
- Brace the stomach and lift the arms and legs just off the floor.
- Sit up and pull the knees into the chest at the same time, balancing on the hips.
- Wrap the arms around the shins briefly at the top.
- Extend back out to the hovering start position under control.
Tips
- Keep the lower back pressed down as you extend out.
- Stay in a hover between reps rather than resting on the floor.
Common mistakes
- Rocking back and forth to gain momentum.
- Arching the back as the legs straighten.
- Dropping the arms and legs to the floor between reps.
Muscles worked by the Tuck Up
Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.
Legs and trunk meet: lower abs and hip flexors join. Curling the ribcage toward the pelvis is spinal flexion by rectus abdominis, with the obliques assisting; a full sit up adds the hip flexors.

What is a good alternative to the Tuck Up?

How do you make the Tuck Up harder?
Add weight or reps, or move on to the V-Up and Weighted Decline Crunch.
