Deficit Push Up

The Deficit Push Up is a strength exercise with no equipment for your chest. Share of the load in the Zulta muscle model: mid chest 29%, upper chest 16% and front delts 16%.

Level: IntermediateEquipment: BodyweightMulti-joint (compound)

How to do it

  1. Place two stable plates or low blocks slightly wider than shoulder-width and put one hand flat on each.
  2. Set up in a high plank with your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Lower your chest between the blocks, below the level of your hands.
  4. Pause briefly at the deepest comfortable stretch.
  5. Press back up to straight arms.

Tips

  • Go only as deep as the shoulders stay pulled back and controlled.
  • Use flat, non-slip surfaces that cannot tip.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping into the bottom fast.
  • Letting the shoulders roll forward in the stretch.
  • Letting the hips sag.

Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.

Feet high moves the press angle toward an incline press. The push up is a closed-chain bench press: same chest, front delt and triceps pattern, with more serratus because the shoulder blades move freely and a plank-like core demand.
