Weighted Tibialis Raise

The Weighted Tibialis Raise is a strength exercise on a machine for your calves. Share of the load in the Zulta muscle model: tibialis anterior 88%.

Level: IntermediateEquipment: MachineSingle-joint (isolation)

How to do it

  1. Sit on a high bench or box so your feet hang freely, with a tib bar or loaded foot strap over the tops of the feet.
  2. Rest the back of the thighs on the bench edge and hold the sides of the bench.
  3. Let the toes point down so the weight stretches the front of the shins.
  4. Pull the toes up toward the shins, lifting the weight as high as you can.
  5. Pause, then lower slowly back to the stretch.

Tips

  • Start light, the tibialis is a small muscle.
  • Keep the knees still and let the ankles do all the work.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking the knees out to swing the weight.
  • Letting the load drop into the stretch.
  • Using a strap that slides toward the toes.

Share per muscle in the Zulta muscle model. The model spreads the load of one rep over 40 muscles, based on EMG and biomechanics research.

Pulling the toes up toward the shin is dorsiflexion, done almost entirely by tibialis anterior.
